Tara M. Hall, 5th Grade Teacher, Frontier Elementary School:

“I want to THANK YOU so much for the Healthy Air Living Kids Contest you sponsored recently, in which you awarded my students with iPod shuffles and a $250 resource check to me. My students and I were so excited to win, but more importantly, excited to share ideas with others in how we can better our air.

As someone who suffers from asthma, helping clean up our air is very important to me. This contest really motivated my students to want to help, and the iPod shuffles just sweetened the deal. J I was amazed at how many pledge forms my students brought back and how excited they were to tell people about ways in which we can all help in cleaning up our air. I also received from you the Blue Sky, Brown Sky curriculum, which really informed us of what is actually in our air. My students were disgusted to learn about all the pollution in our air and I think this curriculum really made it “click” for them as to why we have the flag system at our school indicating what type of air quality we have for the day.

I for one will be sticking to the pledge I made to help clean up our air, and I know my students will be doing the same. I thank you for the materials you provide so we can educate our young students. And again, thank you for the prize pack for my class…it is something none of us will forget!”

“Using curriculum downloaded from the San Joaquin Valley air Pollution Control District’s website, my class was educated on the detrimental effects emissions have upon air quality. My students are uniquely aware of the effects pollution has in our valley. Several of their classmates are sensitive to air quality and are required to remain indoors on days when the Air Quality Index (AQI) is high.

My students were excited that they could make a difference through the Kids for Clean Air contest. Each student personally set out to educate friends and family to commit to conserving energy…We look forward to surpassing our level of participation in the future. ”
